How to Make Wood Puzzles

How to Make Wood Puzzles

Wooden puzzles are long-lasting and durable toys that recall a simpler era. A handcrafted wooden puzzle could become an heirloom with the right construction. Here are some helpful tips on how to make a wooden puzzle.

Things You'll Need

• Piece of pre-cut wood (size and shape you want the finished puzzle to be)
• Jig saw
• Paper

Instructions

o 1
Draw a sketch of the puzzle pieces/shapes you want on the puzzle. Make it the actual size and shape of the puzzle you intend to create. It may take more than one draft before you get it quite right, but you want to make sure its perfect. Once you start cutting there is no turning back.
o 2
Now that you have the puzzle pieces mapped out, transfer them onto the wood by tracing over your sketch with a permanent marker. This will bleed through the paper onto the wood and give you a guide to follow when cutting.
o 3
Before cutting, turn the uncut puzzle over and paint the picture you want on your puzzle. Let this completely dry, and seal it with a wood sealer such as Behr's wood sealer from a hardwear store like Home Depot. Make sure to get a very small container. You can also use a spray on sealer from a craft store such as A.C. Moore.
o 4
Once the picture is dry and sealed, flip the uncut puzzle over and use a jigsaw to follow the pattern of the puzzle pieces. If you have never used a jigsaw, it is better to find a professional or experienced individual to do it for you.
o 5
Now, mix up the pieces and have some fun trying to put it together again.
