How to Solve a Wooden Snake Puzzle

Snake puzzles are also known as snake cubes.
The wooden snake cube is a popular brain teaser. The puzzle requires you to assemble a long wooden snake toy, formed out of 27 blocks connected by a cord with groups of two to three squares each, into a 3-inch cube. These squares and groups must be manipulated in order to correctly form the pieces into a cube.
Things You'll Need
Sticky notes
Marker
Instructions
1 Lay your wooden snake puzzle on your table. Adjust it so that its first group of squares is pointed toward the left side of your table. The group would come in pairs or triplets of cubes, while working your way down the snake.
2 Label each group from 1 through 17 using your sticky notes. Place the labels on the cubes right next to each group that they represent.
3 Draw axis X, Y and Z on each of your sticky notes to remind you of all three directions that you may move your groups or squares toward. X refers to the horizontal axis, while Z is for your vertical axis, and Y is for the diagonal axis. Your Y-axis should move up and to the right of the puzzle. The axis notes will help you systematically move each group of cubes to slowly build the puzzle.
4 Hold the snake from one of its ends to start forming the puzzle. Move the first group of squares into the direction of your X-axis, your second group to its Y-axis, the third group to your X-axis, and your fourth group to the direction of your Z-axis.
5 Direct the fifth group to the Y-axis, while you move the sixth group to its Z-axis.
6 Move the seventh group to its X-axis, the eight group to your Z-axis, and the ninth group going to the Y-axis.
7 Direct the tenth group to its X-axis, the 11th group to your Y-axis, and your twelfth group to the Z-axis.
8 Move the thirteenth group to your Y-axis, the fourteenth group to the Z-axis, and the fifteenth group in the direction of the Y-axis.
9 Direct your sixteenth group of squares to the X-axis, and finally move the last group to its Y-axis to complete the wooden snake puzzle.

How to Solve Wooden Puzzles

How to Solve Wooden Puzzles
Japanese puzzle boxes are often beautifully painted
One of the most beautiful, intricate, and perplexing wooden brainteasers is the Japanese puzzle box. This box challenges the player to figure out how to open it. Sliding pieces are often hidden in complex patterns in the box's artwork and must be moved in the correct order to open the box.
Instructions

1
Examine the puzzle box. Look for patterns in the artwork where sliding pieces may be hidden.
2
Check the areas you have noted with your fingers for sliding pieces.
3
Once you have found all the sliding pieces, play with them one at a time to see if one will move. Once you find the first piece, try to figure out a pattern for the sliders based on the pattern in the artwork. If you get stuck, use trial-and-error to determine which slider to move next.
4
Move the sliding pieces one at a time. When all the sliding pieces are moved in the correct order, the box will pop open.

How to Carve Wooden Puzzles

Wooden puzzles are somewhat more difficult to make than their cardboard counterparts. They require more dangerous tools, more time for planing and sanding, and more effort. But the extra work could be worth it. A wooden puzzle will last a while and present a higher quality piece to show off.

Things You'll Need

Flat, 1/2 inch or thinner piece of wood
Jigsaw
Safety gloves and goggles

Instructions

1
Choose or create your picture. If you are good at woodburning, you can actually try burning a picture into a ½- inch piece of wood. If you like to paint, you can paint a picture on the wood. Otherwise, choose a picture or photo you want to use. Get it into the right size and format on your computer and print it out.
2
Attach the picture to the wood, if it is not already. Use a strong wood or craft glue, and apply the glue evenly to prevent the picture from becoming wrinkled as the glue dries.

3
Apply a layer of gloss or finish to the picture you have created to give it a more professional look. Wait for all the glue and gloss to dry before proceeding to the next step.
4
Flip the picture over. Using a ruler and a pencil draw light intersecting lines on the back of the wood. These lines will form boxes. Depending on how many pieces you want the puzzle to have, make more or fewer boxes.
5
Draw the tabs. A tab on each side of the box will allow it to intersect with the other boxes. Essentially, you are turning the boxes into puzzle pieces.
6
Using the jigsaw, carefully cut out the pieces by following the lines you have drawn on the back.
7
Sand the rough edges of the puzzle pieces, as needed.

How to Make Wood Puzzles

How to Make Wood Puzzles

Wooden puzzles are long-lasting and durable toys that recall a simpler era. A handcrafted wooden puzzle could become an heirloom with the right construction. Here are some helpful tips on how to make a wooden puzzle.

Things You'll Need

• Piece of pre-cut wood (size and shape you want the finished puzzle to be)
• Jig saw
• Paper

Instructions

o 1
Draw a sketch of the puzzle pieces/shapes you want on the puzzle. Make it the actual size and shape of the puzzle you intend to create. It may take more than one draft before you get it quite right, but you want to make sure its perfect. Once you start cutting there is no turning back.
o 2
Now that you have the puzzle pieces mapped out, transfer them onto the wood by tracing over your sketch with a permanent marker. This will bleed through the paper onto the wood and give you a guide to follow when cutting.
o 3
Before cutting, turn the uncut puzzle over and paint the picture you want on your puzzle. Let this completely dry, and seal it with a wood sealer such as Behr's wood sealer from a hardwear store like Home Depot. Make sure to get a very small container. You can also use a spray on sealer from a craft store such as A.C. Moore.
o 4
Once the picture is dry and sealed, flip the uncut puzzle over and use a jigsaw to follow the pattern of the puzzle pieces. If you have never used a jigsaw, it is better to find a professional or experienced individual to do it for you.
o 5
Now, mix up the pieces and have some fun trying to put it together again.
