Wooden puzzles are somewhat more difficult to make than their cardboard counterparts. They require more dangerous tools, more time for planing and sanding, and more effort. But the extra work could be worth it. A wooden puzzle will last a while and present a higher quality piece to show off.
Things You'll Need
Flat, 1/2 inch or thinner piece of wood
Jigsaw
Safety gloves and goggles

Choose or create your picture. If you are good at woodburning, you can actually try burning a picture into a ½- inch piece of wood. If you like to paint, you can paint a picture on the wood. Otherwise, choose a picture or photo you want to use. Get it into the right size and format on your computer and print it out.

Attach the picture to the wood, if it is not already. Use a strong wood or craft glue, and apply the glue evenly to prevent the picture from becoming wrinkled as the glue dries.

Apply a layer of gloss or finish to the picture you have created to give it a more professional look. Wait for all the glue and gloss to dry before proceeding to the next step.

Flip the picture over. Using a ruler and a pencil draw light intersecting lines on the back of the wood. These lines will form boxes. Depending on how many pieces you want the puzzle to have, make more or fewer boxes.

Draw the tabs. A tab on each side of the box will allow it to intersect with the other boxes. Essentially, you are turning the boxes into puzzle pieces.

Using the jigsaw, carefully cut out the pieces by following the lines you have drawn on the back.

Sand the rough edges of the puzzle pieces, as needed.
